We're Building a House

Episode 11: We've Been Framed !!

I never expected to love the process of placing boards and beams in relationship to each other as much as I do. This growth spurt -- this development of a skeleton -- has been so satisfying and amazing. The fresh wood has a musky scent. The beams all have texture and heft. I am peaceful in the strong shelter of our house where I can see how all the angles relate to one another and what holds up what.

The placing of our center stair tree was amazing. It had to be cut exactly flat on the bottom, or it would wobble and have to be craned out and resawn. (I could just imagine the tree getting shorter and shorter as the guys keep sawing the bottom off to get it level.) We had some drama as the crane was trying to place the tree trunk in its spot. Seems the arm of the crane will only lever out so far then stops. We didn't quite make it to the spot, so the crane had to be repositioned to set the 40" diameter tree in place. The second attempt was a winner and the bottom settled down perfectly level! Lindsey and Chris and s-o-o-o-o awesome.

With the house now dimensional, we can start to imagine where things will be, and we were able to make some minor adjustments to the size, placement and shape of the windows.

Picking out windows was a big process. We'll share that with you when the windows actually arrive. We are going with Milguard windows and Anderson French doors. The representatives for the companies are extremely knowledgeable and worth consulting.

Meanwhile, we are cruising Chown, Basco, A Ball, Sears, George Moreland and other venues looking at cabinet hardware, sinks, and faucets. The choices are myriad. These decisions take time - don't wait until the plumber is on his way! Also, you may pick something that needs to be ordered and that can take geologic time.
