We're Building a House

Episode 3: The Sun, the Moon and the Stars (Walt Speaks)

About two weeks after our meeting with Andrew, he called to say that he had some drawings and sketches of the house for us to review. This is where the excitement began to build. Was it a cottage with the full wrap-around porch or was it the farmhouse with the gable windows upstairs and the massive porch in front?

When we walked into Andrew's office, along with the clutter of a busy architect's office, there were some drawings pinned up on the wall. I remarked to myself, "Now that is an interesting house. It certainly can't be OUR house, but I like it. Very bold."

House DrawingWell, I'm sure you can guess, it was our house! Andrew had taken our comments about how we lived and what we liked about the house we sold, and he came up with a strikingly contemporary structure that saved all the trees and view. As he said, "Everyone wants to build their grandmother's house. Well, this isn't it. This is your home."

Well, we were stunned and pleased at the same time. As with the sun, moon and stars window, we asked someone to put their artistry into a piece of work for us, and we got something wonderfully different than what we expected.

We are now ready for our architect to do the final set of plans. In the final set, all of the choices we make will be spelled out so that our builder can give us a bid.

We also have hired an arborist to advise us on building close to the trees. We decided early on that we would save as many of the large trees as we could and to incorporate them into the plans for the house. We wanted to have as good an ocean view as we could get, but we also wanted the view to be of the trees surrounding our neighborhood. We are waiting for his report.

Sincerely,
Walt Covert Broker/Owner
